This view shows the 'crank' in place, waiting for the packing material to be placed. Once the packing material is correctly placed, the babbit material is poured into the space between the crank and crank journal. The journal caps are in place while pouring. Once the babbit cools, it is cut at the line where the crank journal and journal cap meet. The babbit is then shaped with a shaping tool, smooting it for proper fit with the crank, and trimming off the excess material.
