Purchased new in December 1902.  Family has the original sale bill.

The dealer that sold it now sells Cadillac's and Pontiacs.  

Note:  There is not a spring on the intake valve, they used a round ball weight on the keeper to close it.

Some History on this engine:

"This engine must be a very early one, Serial No. 93, manufactured in 1902 and rated at 4.2 h.p. In a previous lifetime it was used to pump water in Northern Idaho. (I think the name of the town was Hope, Idaho, but if it's important, let me confirm that.) Other than that, he doesn't have much history on it.   By the time it got to him, the engine had been converted to spark plug ignition. He wanted to change it back to low tension, but didn't have the foggiest notion what the original igniter and trip  mechanism looked like. So, he fabricated what's on there, now, doing the best he could to imagine what the original must have looked like."

 This is the earliest flat top engine that I have seen.  This engine has the ignition and pushrod on the opposite side of the engine when compared to later flat top Challenge engines.  The serial number does not fit the documented catalog information either with the flat top engines starting a 20,000.
