This a Galloway 5hp Round Rod Hit and Miss Engine. The 'round rod' means that is has a round connecting rod instead of a cast iron rod in the shape of an 'I-beam'. The round rod engines were built before 1915. I'm guessing that this engine was built the last couple weeks of December 1911 or the first few months of 1912. The first picture below shows it sitting at an auction in Battle Creek, Michigan on July 10, 2004, which is where I purchased it. The other four pictures show the engine just as I got home after purchasing it.
The moveable shaft on the ignitor was stuck so I removed the ignitor and put it in a coffee can and used the electrolysis process to unstick it. It took about 4 or 5 hours of 'cooking' to free it up. This picture shows the ignitor disassembled. The moveable shaft is in really good shape and also the 45 degree taper surface that makes the seal to the combustion chamber. The mica washers will need to be replaced along with the ignitor spring. Possibly the stationary shaft will need to be replaced.
Below shows a closeup of the moveable shaft with one of the points on the left. The part on the right is the stationary shaft.
