Canadian Engines
The Manitoba Pump and Engine Company was another firm to copy the Farm Pump Engine. The copy engine was quite similar to the Fuller & Johnson original. The flywheel did not have raised lettering and the engine had a flared base for bolting direct to a foundation. Details are vague but it appears the Manitoba based company was sued by Fuller & Johnson and had to cease production of the engine.

Another interesting engine has come to light in the form of a copied 4hp model N. There is no tag, no serial number, but nearly every part number begins with 4N. Some numbers are part for part identical to the genuine F&J product. All dimensions on the major castings match up almost exactly to the 4hp F&J engine as well. Casting quality is superb, often bettering those coming from the F&J foundry with the exception of a very crudely forged connecting rod. Several noticeable differences include a large raised flaired lip around hopper opening, hollow cast flywheel rims for counterbalance, square billet crankshaft and no provisions for a fuel tank vent in base. Other small changes are a simplified tin gear guard, the governor gear has 1 tooth less than a standard F&J gear, a 6hp muffler is used and the ignitor relief in block is sized so that only the early 1913 model diamond shaped ignitor body will fit. A tiny trace of red paint was found in some well protected areas. Who made this engine, when it was made, what it was called and any decals/lettering were used if any are unknown.
