As most folks that have attended shows featuring old engines and farm equipment know the Fairbanks Morse company manufactured many types and sizes of engines for many years. Of all the engines and literature I have seen there is reference to only one model that appears to use the side shaft configuration. Below are some images scanned from a 1908 Fairbanks Morse General Catalog No. 60.
This engine was known as the Type "L" engine and was designed to operate on producer gas. It was offered in 15, 25, 35 and 50 hp. ratings and was available in both general use and electric lighting service types. Shipping weights ranged from 5,900 to 20,400 pounds depending on size and type. Flywheels ranged from 47 to 78 inches in diameter.
