Rally Display Stands

Ever been to a rally and wondered what you were looking, or witnessed people incorrectly identifying engines? Or worse still, looked at an illegibly scrawled notice on a piece of cardboard flapping in the breeze.

My engine club, the Mount Alexander Vintage Engine Club Inc. (Victoria, Australia), believes that it is very important to present a professional and uniform standard of presentation at rallies. The club encourages all members to wear club name badges and to use display stands, name badges and colour, desktop processed, laminated display cards which it subsidises and provides for all members.

This is the plan provided by MAVEC Inc. to help members to construct a simple and sturdy display stand.

Display Stand plan

My stand in action! I have made this one from aluminium for durability, strength and water resistance. I have also made some minor modifications to the original design.

Display Stand

The legs are held to the 1/4" thick backing plate by four 1/4" bolts countersunk through from the front. Wing nuts allow me to disassemble the stand for easy packing and transport.

A figure-8 link chain attaches under the wing nuts and limits the distance the legs can travel. The legs are 1" diameter square tubing and have plastic chair ends fitted top and bottom to keep out dirt and moisture and to "finish" the look of the stand

I have had my A4 sized display cards laminated for durability and water repellence and use velcro strips to attach them to the backing plate. This also allows me change the cards easily depending on what engines etc. I am displaying.

Since this photograph was taken I have added another similarly sized backing plate beneath this one to allow me to include more display sheets without the need for a second stand.

The next alteration will be a polished wooden strip, to be mounted underneath the second backing plate, to allow me to display rally badges and medallions.
