I began collecting single cylinder flywheel engines in about 1994.
My first engine was a 6 horsepower Fairbanks-Morse Z manufactured in 1917.
It had originally been used to power a water pump in the Johnson Bayou area of Southwest
Louisiana. In the winter of 1925 a freeze caused the water jacket around the cylinder
to break apart and the head to crack, basically making the engine of no use. It was replaced
by an identical 1925 model and was retired to a corner of the pump shed where it sat for about 65 years.
It was rescued by Robert Mayeux about ten years ago. It changed hands and criss-crossed the state several times before I
finally bought it from Nicholas Bettevy, who at the time also owned the 1925 model.
Though it was in terrible shape, I was able to restore it to the
condition shown in the picture below. This engine was featured in the November 1995 issue
of Gas Engine Magazine, page 22. It's one of the best running engines I have. It usually starts on
the first flip of the flywheel every time.

This was all it took. Old iron was in my blood and the purchase of this engine led to the inevitable, more engines. I've bought and sold a number of engines since then. Louisiana Two Cylinder Club Power of the Past Visit with Sam Carruth. Sam Carruth Revisited. Remembering Nicholas Bettevy. |
