POURING BABBIT INSERTS
PAGE # 3

Making progress. Still have to drill a hole in the upper
bearing shell for the grease cup, and to put some grease
grooves in the babbit bearing shells.

Comparing the new bearing inserts to the old.

I used a Dremel tool with a small steel burr to make
the grease grooves.
I wish I could have made more professional
looking grooves, but this was the best I could come up with.
Guess the grooves won't show anyway.

Done Grooving

The final fitting of the babbit inserts using some
Prussian Blue dye. I coated the crankshaft main journal
with the dye, then place the babbit bearing over the shaft,
then rotated it back and forth some. Any high spots in the bearing
will then have blue dye on it. Then it's time to get your bearing
scraper out and scrape off the high spots. Repeat, Repeat, Repeat, etc.
Finally, once I got about 75% of the babbit and crankshaft making
contact, I called it good. I figured that I'll gain additional contact
as the bearing wears in.
