"Wheels
at the Vaal"
3rd & 4th September 2005
"Vaal Old
Wheels" (or "Vaal Ou Wiele" in Afrikaans) is the club that
I belong to. The name is derived from the river which flows through the
region and the fact that the area is commonly referred to as the "Vaal
Triangle" being bounded by 3 industrial towns - Vereeniging,
Vanderbijlpark and Sasolburg.
Our
annual show is called "Wheels at the Vaal" and, as the name
implies the main emphasis of this show is on vintage motor vehicles (or
anything old with wheels - like Grandpa on roller skates :-)) but we
also have a strong showing of vintage
stationary engines, tractors, farming machinery and equipment
(including steam), animal drawn wagons and carriages and a section
dealing with anything "collectible" called Collectors Mania.
This
year, for the first time, the show was held in the
beautiful grounds of the Northwest University campus on the banks of
the Vaal River. In the "Old South Africa" this university was called
the "Potchefstroom University for Higher Christian Education". We thank
the University as well as the main sponsors (Chevrolet) for all the
effort they put into making this show the success that it was.
My interest is mainly in
the stationary engine section and
most of these photographs are of that section but I have included some
pics of other features. I am awaiting pictures of the other attractions
and will add to the page as I receive them. Anyone with additional
pictures of the show is asked to contact me and I will include them
(Contact details on the front page of this site.)
Follow the links above or below to
the
pictures. Each thumbnail can be clicked to bring up a bigger picture
which I have attempted to keep to less than 100Kbytes each with a few
just over this size. I have opitimised the pics for fast loading on
slow connections but if anyone would like higher resolution copies
please contact me and I'll make a plan - just bear in mind that I
have a slow connection and would not like to spend hours logged on to
send out pics.
As an experiment I am also making this
page and all those below it (including the pics) available as a .zip
file for those who would rather download the whole darn thing and view
it at their leisure when off line.
Let me know what you think of the
idea. Click this icon to download
and follow instructions in the
zipfile. Be warned that the file is about 10 Megabytes so use a
Download Manager if necessary.
(P.S. Plan temporarily changed - due to the difference between relative
and absolute links the HTML will not work offline on your computer in
it's present form as I have used absolute links. I will attend to this
soon but in the meantime I will just add all the pics to the zipfile
and you can look at them in your favourite viewer.)
