PARAFFINALIA
Hello All!
Hendrik has been coining,
or should I say modifying, phrases again. How's this: "The difference between
men and boys is the weight of their toys!" Somebody wrote in to
Stationary Engine Magazine recently from Sweden, saying that his collection
of approximately 80 engines, has a combined weight of 80 tons! Can anybody
beat that?
The Piketberg Show went
well, by the reports of the members who were able to attend. A novel idea
was tried, where the engines were paraded in the arena on a trailer. Peter
Boast gave a commentary, while Arthur kept a low profile. Well done to Pierre
Rosseau, the new chairman of the WP branch of the Veteran Tractor &
Engine Club, for organising this, his 'home show', and thanks to Hennie
Richter for his help. Let's hope Peter Gildenhuys' Lister A Radiator Cooled
will be running by next year's show.
Good news is that Veteran
Farmer's website has sorted out its problem with its server, and have a
lot of new material to view, including our show report of the Riding for
Disabled Show this last February. If you haven't got your password yet,
and have paid the new R100 sub for a year's viewing, then let Juanita Du
Toit know at bevp@rf.nokia.co.za
. If you haven't taken out a sub, then you don't know what you're missing!
If you do experience problems viewing the articles, then Joanne West (click
at the top on her address) is the person to contact. They say that since
the announcement of the magazine going on to the 'web', their input of articles,
letters and information has almost completely dried up. So please write
in and let them have your views, photo's, etc. They have even agreed to
publish our little newsletter!
Knight-Macaire Videos
in England have brought out an excellent video called Engines Down Under,
which includes a smaller Clayton & Shuttleworth Trusty than ours, amongst
many others. The photography is excellent, as is the commentary, and as
one would expect with Patrick Knight behind it, well researched. Price £14.99
from 10 Upper Elms Road, Aldershot, Hampshire, GU11 3ET. Add £3.50
for airmail delivery.
POWER PARAFFIN
At the recent AGM of
the WP branch of the Veteran Tractor and Engine Club, there was a discussion
about what to use in place of this, which is now almost impossible to obtain.
Christie Maree mentioned a magazine with a blue cover, with a man in a white
coat on it, as having a formulation which is supposed to work. Please contact
me with your suggestions, and I will publish the outcome for members to
try out and comment on.
Our Wanted/For Sale column
has met with a bit of success, Derick has taken the Fairbanks Morse parts
that Philip and I had left over, and will, in turn have some parts
left over. He is still short of a carburettor, but doesn't want to take
up Oom Flip's offer, mentioned in the last issue, just for the carb. If
anybody has a loose carb for a FM Z Style C 3 HP, please let me know, and
I'll pass the message on to him. In return he gave me a whole Wisconsin,
to take the carb off for my Gibson. Trouble is, the engine is too complete!
And it has a neat output housing with an over-centre clutch, and triple
belt pulley on, so that's another project in the pipeline. He has since
contacted me that he has a loose carb for me, so the Gibson can be completed,
without breaking the whole one up.
Johan Stemmet wrote in
to say that while he couldn't help materially with Johan Mundey's Bentall,
he did know that a similar engine is featured in the Video, 'Power of the
Past'. Any little bit of help like this can help a project along. After
all, where would we be with the Clayton & Shuttleworth, without 100
year-old engravings to work on? So please, if you can help, let us know!
Philip was sent a comparison chart for old plugs by Derick Kleynhans, which
we will look into duplicating and including here.
INFORMATION
REQUIRED
Arthur Wilding is looking
for any information regarding the Smit & Co diesel engine he has recently
acquired. Detaild from its name-plate state: Smit & Co. Machinfabrieken
N.V., Kinderdijk, Holland. Type 1 BS, HP 10/19, RPM 750/1500, Series 11957.
It is a single cylinder vertical, with ignitor-paper start-aid.
WANTED
Derick Kleynhans is looking
for a petrol-only carb for an International LB, also a carb for the FM ZC
mentioned above.
Philip Gritpipe-Thynne is taking a long chance asking if anybody has a Wico
EK Magneto, dead or alive, to complete his International M, for which we
have made a plan with a sprocket to drive a normal magneto, without disturbing
the trip mechanism for the EK.
I am still looking for a screw cap and straps for
a Petters fuel tank, to complete a little horizontal National diesel.
Hendrik van der Berg is still looking for the insulator that carries the
brush, and connects the plug wire to the magneto, for a Hill magneto . And
any parts for a PH1060 Crossley.

Oom Flip Viljoen still
has stripped a Fairbanks Morse Z Style C 3HP (with an unusual facility for
a base-mounted magneto on the crankcase cover). The governor/cam side main
bearing housing (their weak point) has broken and has been repaired badly,
and a poor job has been done of brazing valve guides into the head. If anybody
wants to take on this challenging restoration, please contact him on 028
840 1117 (Office) or 028 840 2076 (Home). Perhaps what Derick has left
over could help to complete this.
Johan Stemmet het 'n
Iron Horse generator, 12V, vir parte of om te herstel. Dit kort 'n tenk,
suier en kleppe. Die generator toets reg. Iemand wat belangstel kan dit
kom haal. Bel hom op 023 626 2512 of faks 023 626 3562.
WHAT'S
ON
23rd
& 24th September .(That's the Saturday and Sunday of a long week-end
that includes the Monday,) Vintage Steam Expo at Nottingham Road.
Paul Deglon has phoned to find out who is attending, and we have put him
on to Peter and Mike. Anybody else planning to take anything up, please check
in with him. Denis Usher has given me his number, 033 3304907.
26th
to 30th September is the Robertson Lenteskou. That's the whole week
after the public holiday Monday mentioned above. The important days are the
Friday and Saturday. A certificate will be awarded to everything which is
displayed. There will be facilities for camping and caravanning in the Show's
caravan park (phone the information there at 023 626 4437 for details).
They need details of who is attending by 15th September, please. The Saturday
programme, according to Johan Stemmet, (phone numbers above under 'For Sale')
is a trip through the town at about 10am, back to the Show-grounds for a
parade around the arena at 12.30. Everybody who exhibits is given a free
ticket for a meal and a 'dop' (who says the 'Dop' system has been done
away with? This is Robertson, after all!) The rest of the afternoon is for
enjoying the exhibits, until about 4.30pm, when packing up usually starts.
Saturday,
14th October is the Villiersdorp Show. Eniel Viljoen is in charge, and
he says that we will be just outside the showgrounds themselves. A cover
charge of R20 will get us entry into the show itself for two, and food, and
drinks, in moderation. He hopes this modest charge will not put anybody off
coming and exhibiting, and assures us that it is good value for money. He
says that there is big pressure on the shows of the smaller towns to shut
down, and they are determined to keep this one going, so let's help them
draw the crowds.
20th
& 21st October (Friday & Saturday) is the Laingsburg Karoofees.
Contact Piet Geldenhuÿs on 023 551 1445. Christie v.d.Westhuizen will
be there, from De Doorns.
BIEN
DONNÉ!!!!! On the Wednesday and Thursday at the beginning
of November, I must check if it's the 1st & 2nd, or the week after,
and will give plenty of warning. We all are hoping for a bumper turn-out.
There is a report on last year's show on www.veteranfarmer.com. Lets see
if we can beat the turn out by a big margin!
17th
& 18th February 2001 (Saturday & Sunday) are the dates for the
next SARDA Constantia Farm Fair. This will make a fourth appearance
for some of us to this show, which is Peter Boast's 'baby'. A report of
this show has just appeared in www.veteranfarmer.com,
with a superb picture of Richard Moth's Ransomes Sims & Jefferies, taken
by Leigh Anne Ellis.
Middle
June 2001, 3rd Annual Winter Warm up, possibly in conjunction with the
Early Ford Car Club.
Remember
to bring your name-tags along to any of these events!
