CAPE VINTAGE ENGINE & MACHINERY SOCIETY
PARAFFINALIA,
NEWSLETTER No 2 AUGUST 2000

Hello all,
We've all heard the expression: "Dis lekker by die see......jammer die gety is sô laag!", well up in Douglas where Hendrik comes from, they say there's an old engine under every tree.............but, sorry, there aren't many trees! Anyway, he writes to say that he has tracked down a tree, and......yes, sure enough, there's a nice little Crossley open crank under it. Maybe he'll have to cut the tree down to keep the legend going!

Although many of us are not keen on competiition, as it always leads to disappointments and arguments, some people are, and it seems that the judging criteria for engines are not as advanced as they are with tractors. Christie found it hard to decide who to give prizes to, and who to leave out. I have listed a few points below, which I hope you will add to, or comment on, with regard to judging. When we are satisfied with the list, I suggest that we send it to the new comittee, so that whoever has the unenviable job of judging, has something to work on. All the points so far are centred around effort, and not expense. Having said that this club has no rules, it should be remembered that these are not rules, merely guidelines for judging.
1.Does it run?
2.Has it run all/ most of the day, or is the owner available to start it on a regular basis? Is he there to answer questions?
3.Is it presentable, in either its original paint, or in new?
4.Does it have stickers, original, or good facsimilies?
5.Is it more or less in the correct colour?
6.Is a logsheet visible, with description? Neat?
7.IS IT DRIVING SOMETHING?
8.Is the person going to be there for the whole length of the show?
9.Is it all his own work?(Gerestoureer of gelaat restoureer)?
10.Is it on a base/trolley?
Your comments, please! (Or should we just leave it and let the Tractor men fumble along?)

WANTED: I am looking for a screw-on cap and retaining straps for a Petters AV 1 fuel tank. Also a carb and air-cleaner and exhaust for a single cylinder Wisconsin, so I can get my Gibson going. (I have the casting that bolts onto the engine, with the elbow for the carb and the thread for the silencer).

From Hendrik van der Berg in Douglas comes the following request: "I need the insulator that carries the brush, and connects the plug wire to the magneto, for a Hill magneto. And any parts for a PH1060 Crossley.

" Philip Gray-Taylor wonders if anybody has a comparison chart concerning old spark-plugs, particularly the 18mm and bigger ones. We tend to be only too happy to find anything that fits, without worrying if it's the reason why the engine won't start, or run well. Can anybody help?

When ordering spare parts quote this

Heybridge Maldon England." Johan het 'n foto met sy versoek saamgestuur.......As ons vir hom in enige opsig kan help, sal 'n baie mooi enjin weer brul! Tot sy oorspronklike 'decal' wapen is nog duidelik leesbaar.Dit is deur Lloyds & Co, Cape Town, verskaf, vóór hulle Stewarts & Lloyds geword het!

LISTER SPARES: Since S&L have lost the Lister agency, it seems that they have lost interest as well. All is not lost, and I can report that we have tracked down somebody who knows the spares, and is helpful on top of it! His name is Ingram, and he works at Ian Dickie in Epping. (021 554 3431) He helped me straight away with the 1¼" silencer for my Lister A and had it here while others were still asking for serial numbers! He recently managed to find a cylinder head gasket for a National AH1 (OK, it is the same as the Petters AV1, and we told him so, but the right part was here in a day or two).

FOR SALE/AVAILABLE: Oom Flip Viljoen has stripped a Fairbanks Morse Z Style C 3HP (with an unusual facility for a base-mounted magneto on the crankcase cover). The governor/cam side main bearing housing (their weak point) has broken and has been repaired badly, and a poor job has been done of welding in valve guides into the head. If anybody wants to take on this challenging restoration, please contact him on 028 840 1117 (Office) or 028 840 2076 (Home). Philip Gray-Taylor and I have many more parts for the same engine available which may help complete the project (but not the main bearing housing, which was totally missing)(or the magneto, which has exactly the right gear for his New Way, we just have to make a bracket.)
Transfers/decals, for Fairbanks Morse, Lister, and many more engines, as advertised in Stationary Engine Magazine are available from Philip Gray-Taylor on 021 5523247, or click on his e-mail address above.

And now a look at the Calendar:
Piketberg Show 24th, 25th & 26th August (That's this coming Thursday, Friday, and Saturday). Peter Gildenhuys has asked for as many engines as possible to attend, so please try to be there. Peter Boast and Phillip Minaar have said they will be there, who else can get away from commitments at home? It is the 'Home Show' of Pierre Rossouw, who was elected new chairman of the WP branch of the Veteran Tractor & Engine Club, and who would like to see the Annual Show and AGM moved from venue to venue in future. He was narrowly out-voted, and will probably be agitating for this in the future. Let's see what sort of show he can organise! He can be reached on 022 942 1327, or contact Peter Gildenhuys direct on 022 942 1206, or click on his e-mail address above.

23rd & 24th September .(That's the Saturday and Sunday of a long week-end that includes the Monday,) Vintage Steam Expo at Nottingham Road. Paul Deglon has phoned to find out who is attending, and we have put him on to Peter and Mike. Anybody else planning to take anything up, please check in with him. Denis Usher has given me his number, 033 3304907.

26th to 30th September is the Robertson Lenteskou. That's the whole week after the public holiday Monday mentioned above. The important days are the Friday and Saturday. A certificate will be awarded to everything which is displayed. There will be facilities for camping and caravanning in the Show's caravan park (phone the information there at 023 626 4437 for details). They need details of who is attending by 15th September, please. The Saturday programme, according to Johan Stemmet, (phone numbers above under 'For Sale') is a trip through the town at about 10am, back to the Show-grounds for a parade around the arena at 12.30. Everybody who exhibits is given a free ticket for a meal and a 'dop' (who says the 'Dop' system has been done away with? This is Robertson, after all!) The rest of the afternoon is for enjoying the exhibits, until about 4.30pm, when packing up usually starts.

Saturday, 14th October is the Villiersdorp Show. Eniel Viljoen is in charge, and he says that we will be just outside the showgrounds themselves. A cover charge of R20 will get us entry into the show itself for two, and food, and drinks, in moderation. He hopes this modest charge will not put anybody off coming and exhibiting, and assures us that it is good value for money. He says that there is big pressure on the shows of the smaller towns to shut down, and they are determined to keep this one going, so let's help them draw the crowds.
20th & 21st October (Friday & Saturday) is the Laingsburg Karoofees. Contact Piet Geldenhuÿs on 023 551 1445. Christie v.d.Westhuizen will be there, from De Doorns.

BIEN DONNÉ!!!!! On the Wednesday and Thursday at the beginning of November, I must check if it's the 1st & 2nd, or the week after, and will give plenty of warning. We all are hoping for a bumper turn-out. There is a report on last year's show on www.veteranfarmer.com. Lets see if we can beat the turn out by a big margin!
Remember to bring your name-tags along to any of these events!

News from here is that we have a sponsor for the new sleeve for the Clayton & Shuttleworth Trusty. Roy Hirsch of Hirsch Hydraulic Works (021 7155630) has agreed to supply us with thick-wall Hydraulic Honed tubing, and the machining required to install it into the engine I can manage on my own machinery. This has rolled a big stone out of the way of the project. Roy was at the Big Show at Brandvlei and was overwhelmed by what we had there, and the enthusiasm shown by all. He imports Commercial Shearing hydraulic pumps direct, and does the full range of hydraulic repairs, so please support him, so he can 'make it up'.

Rolf and Berna Bosch gave us a big old 220V DC generator, possibly from an old cinema. We have decided to fit it to my Ruston & Hornsby 2Y HR, so I am busy making up a 'perch bracket' up at the front of its trolley, like a Showman's Engine. Philip says it should be able to light up no less than 53 100W bulbs! That should look impressive. I hope to have it ready for the Villiersdorp show, and to take it on from there to Bien Donné.
