"Paraffinalia"
was the
newsletter sent out worldwide by Andy Selfe of the Cape Vintage Engine
& Machinery Society from August 2000 until the last edition in
early 2005. Due to pressures of work Andy was no longer able to
continue with "Parafinalia" and I've agreed to archive all the issues
here. There are 3 missing
editions - (Paraffinalia 5,6 & 8) - if anyone has a copy please
Email it to me
for
inclusion here. The Cape Vintage Engine & Machinery Society was
formed
on the
5th June 1999 from a group of like-minded people interested in the
preservation of old Stationary Engines and the equipment which they
used to drive. The decision was taken immediately that there would be
no rules and no subs. I was happy to become secretary, and soon after,
started a newsletter. The name Paraffinalia came to mind after a while,
and it stuck. Anybody who expressed a vague interest was enrolled into
the Society, the only common factor was being on the mailing list for
Paraffinalia! By issue 28, it was being e-mailed to about 500 people
worldwide, and with the help of Philip, printed and posted to several
people who did not have e-mail facilities. Within minutes of
it being received by Paul Evans of Internal Fire Museum in Wales, it
was
added to his website, so ever more people got to see it.
The compilation of Paraffinalia was fun, it mostly
wrote
itself, being cobbled together by snippets sent in from all over the
world. The
sending out was not fun, even in batches of 30, also the rejections
needed
following up. Eventually it became too much for me to continue, and it
lapsed.
I received thousands of complimentary messages in that time, and with
many
of them, more snippets to add in. I am still receiving mails asking
what
has happened to it, have I taken so-and-so off the mailing list, or am
I
cross with them?
Then recently, Gordon Riley and Philip Gray-Taylor
decided
to start
up the newsletter again, for which, many thanks!
Andy Selfe.
