Jerrys Old Engines in South Africa

Yesterdays Advertisements.
5th December 2007

I was recently fortunate enough to be given an opportunity to spend some time in the archives of "Farmers Weekly" which is South Africas oldest "English Language" farming magazine. My thanks to Farmers Weekly and to their archive  manager, Auriel for all the help.

Here are some of the adverts I scanned at that time. These mostly date from 1912 and 1913. Surprisingly most of the products on offer originate from the U.S.A.  Bear in mind that, at this time the 2nd Anglo/Boer War had only ended 10 years earlier and we were all part of the British Empire. Maybe there was still a lot of resentment to the Brits and farmers (boers) preferred to buy elsewhere!

Please excuse the fact that some of the pages are not lying "flat". These archived editions are bound in hardcovers and are approximately 100mm thick and the paper is very brittle.  I was loath to press them down flat onto the scanner lest I damaged a page.
The page size used in those days was much bigger than A4 and I had to "split" many pages thinking that I could stitch them together with software later. Although possible this has actually proved to be very time consuming and the results are not always accepteable so I've resorted to using them "as is".  Next time I'll rather use a digital camera.

Where possible I've added links to details in the ads. I've tried to reach a happy medium between download speed and detail but with a preference for detail.  Those (like me) who do not have "Broadband" yet will have to be a bit patient as some of the bigger pics load.
