Jerry's Old Engines in South Africa

18 December 2005.

Petters found by my friend Neville Botha

In England you have Roland Craven (Petternut) - In South Africa we have Neville Botha - both are crazy about Petter engines especially the Petter M range.

Neville actually instigated this trip as he already had 2 Petters lined up for collection but was lucky enough to find another 2 along the way. All 4 were pretty good finds and rare in this part of the world. He also found 2 Alco Featherweight gensets and a Ruston & Hornsby size 2. The Ruston and one of the Petters had to be left behind as we had no more space on the truck - we will go back next week to collect them!

Featured here are:
1) Petter M Benford top (Cistern or Bog top) built for the Benford concrete mixers.
2) Petter Universal Four - twin cylinder horizontally opposed air cooled.
3)Petter Junior - 2 1/2 H.P. with unusual (in this part of the world) hopper and "tulip top" silencer.
4) Petter Diesel (hot bulb) - Pics to follow - unfortunately I do not have a pic or information on this one as we could not fit it on the truck and will be going back to fetch it (as well as the Ruston & Hornsby size 2) next week
.

Benford Top ("Bogtop") engine.

The hopper and top are broken but the bits are there for the hopper to be rewelded.

There are enough parts of the top left to copy and have a new one cast.
Universal Four.
Parts missing but restorable
We went back to collect this Petter "S" Type on 28th December (as well as the Ruston & Hornsby 2HR). The previous owner had started restoring this engine but never finished.
