PORTLAND 2003 Watkins Glen |
|
27 August, 2003 When planning our first trip to America in 1999, we had studied the AAA guides for the various states we intended to visit in great detail. Christian had been much impressed by the photograph of Watkins Glen on the front cover of the New York State book and so we had included it in our travels. Unfortunately, that year there had been very little rain, so the various falls were either unimpressive or non-existant. Although we had been lucky with the weather during our travels, 2003 had been remarkably wet prior to our arrival in the US, so it seemed like a good time to revisit Watkins Glen. After our strenuous hike the night before, a gentle 2 mile stroll would be just about right! The gorge cut by the stream is spectacular, descending 400' over about 1½ miles between 200' high cliffs, with numerous waterfalls, some of which go right over the trail. It was a thoroughly enjoyable walk, and I even held my nerve crossing the bridge, seen here behind Jim and I, before descending back to the carpark. The afternoon was spent driving north to the Thousand Islands region. The further we travelled, the greater the distances between towns until we finally arrived in Alexandria Bay, and selected a motel with an attractive outdoor pool at the request of Tom and Chris!
