| One engine we remembered from 7 years ago was the Taylor A vacuum engine,
on display again at Padstow. The "A" series were recalled by the manufacturer and replaced by the "B"
series, so "A"s are particularly rare. To Arnie's delight, the very first engine in the row was a really nice Lorenz, so while he was drooling over that, I wandered on down the row and started chatting with the owner of two more Lorenz's. He was telling me that he had found the logo used on his 3HP on a website called "Rusty Iron", printed it off and made the decal. He had also found a registry for Lorenz engines, and said he'd really like to get in touch with the American owner of that website, but his computing skills didn't yet run to email. "No problem", I said. "See the guy in the white hat covered in badges walking towards you? That's him!" All in all, it was a great show, with many unusual engines and some great working displays. Jim had spotted a vacuum pump for sale, and ideas were popping up like little lightbulbs - mostly along the lines of the Whitehead engine we had seen at Astle Park the previous week. After we'd seen the show, he went off to talk to the seller, and sure enough, could soon be seen heading back to us along the line of Cornish flags with a big smile on his face and a chunk of rusty iron in his hand! |
