Next job was the floor of Tom's bedroom. This floor has had a problem for at least 30 years, but the fact that Tom now has the majority of a Mini up there meant that the problem was getting worse, and he was liable to end up sleeping in the lounge! The floor bounced so badly that things fell off the shelves when anyone walked across the room. We expected this to be another major job, involving lifting the floor to strengthen it, but once again, we were pleasantly surprised. The builder suggested a steel I-beam to lift the floor from underneath. One end could fix into the brickwork of the chimney breast and the other into a girder which had been put in when the wall by the stairs was removed. On this picture, it's also possible to see the cracks and uneven surface of the ceiling.
