What a revelation!! With the old ceiling gone, we were left with the floorboards (unfortunately not uniform enough to be left on show) and beautiful, untreated elm joists. The bar across the room was literally to hold the outside walls in. We would have left that exposed, but it was right across the centre of the room - directly above where the I-beam would go.
