Ward Capstan Lathes

Ward 1A Rebuild - Page 3

The bed of the lathe, now with the headstock temporarily mounted on it for cleaning and checking.
The head cannot be fitted permanently yet, as the mounting bolts for the tray to the base are beneath it and have to be fitted first.

Front shot of the collet holder mounting face. Note how large the head is in relation to the bed width.

A slightly better shot of the underside of the rear saddle, showing more of the bevel
gears for the turret rotation and the rack for the forward/backwards motion.
Adjustable gib strips are fitted on both sides for wear adjustment.

Rear view of the headstock showing the two-step pulley which also incorporates the spindle brake drum.
The headstock contains only a hollow shaft and bearings, there are no gears etc.
Note how narrow the bed is in relation to the diameter of the headstock. The brake lever is sticking out on the right.

Looking a lot better after a good clean up, the front saddle four-way
toolpost, complete with the (once missing) mounting plate.
