While not a part of the Portland Gas Engine and Tractor Show, our other visits during this vacation proved very interesting, particularly the Auburn-Cord Museum, Henry Ford Museum, the Great Lakes Freighter in Toledo and a brief visit to Canada for a couple of hours drive. These pictures are of the Willis S Boyer, a Great Lakes freighter that has been preserved in Toledo, and some interesting local bits of Canadian Pacific Railway history in Windsor, Ontario. The Henry Ford Museum and Auburn-Cord Museum will be on different menus.
The Great Lakes Freighter "Willis S Boyer" is an interesting bit of history, and is in surprisingly good condition. Located almost in the centre of Toledo it is easily accessible and had ample car parking when we visited. It needs more visitors and more financial help to get where they want to go, but they are running it on a shoestring until more help comes along. Some of the pictures are a bit "touristy", but we probably won't be going back there real soon so grabbed as many shots as we could.
Driving into Canada on UK Passports was no problem, and we had our USA Visa Waiver documents in our passports for re-entry into the USA. At all times we found both sets of customs and immigration people very friendly and helpful. We drove up the river side from Detroit to Marine City, MI and crossed on the car ferry to Sombra, Ontario.
The drive down to Windsor was unusually rural, with virtually no main highways on the patch we were driving through, even the Sat Nav got lost a couple of times!
