Tri-State Engine Show - Portland Indiana 2003

Our trip to The Show - Part 8

Prices seemed reasonable for most of the engines, while a few were obviously 'POA' as no prices or details were posted on them. It is much the same in the UK, you charge what the market will bear. Not being familiar with USA engines and prices I had to work on my own comparisons based on engine size and condition, but it still worked out cheaper in most cases, the Ruston & Hornsby engines being two of the exceptions.

There didn't seem to be the quantity of outright 'junk' that we get at the UK shows, probably because the venue is a serious meeting-up place for both buyers and sellers, so no point in bring too much tat, it wouldn't sell anyway. Tractor spares were a big part of the Trading Post sale area, which is in keeping with the aims of the show and the club that runs it, but I thought that engine parts were a bigger proportion overall, not counting those who had both tractor and engine parts for sale.

The little V4 John Deere starter engine (below, left hand side) almost got bought by me, I was really tempted by it, but common sense prevailed and I had to walk away from it. It was a really small little watercooled engine, and I will look out for one of these on the next trip and try and arrange transport back home. Shipping is always a problem with heavy stuff, but sea freight is the way to go.

Bear in mind that while we have put up around 200 pictures of the show, we could have doubled that number and still not have shown everything. For every item that we took a picture of, there was another three or four that we walked by. It was very difficult sometimes making a decision on what to shoot and whether it would be interesting to others when they looked at the pictures in the future.
