In an engine in which liquid fuel is injected into a cylinder without spraying air, the supply of scavenging air is equal to at least twice the volume swept through by the piston. The engine may have oppositely moving pistons, and the cylinders may be provided with tangentially arranged ports to give the air a whirling motion as it enters.
