This invention provides for constructing the cylinder with a strengthening device consisting of arranging a series of independent steel rings around the cylinder liner. The water jacket is completed by a shell of sheet metal not designed to take up any stress.
In one arrangement the rings are formed narrower near the front where they make contact with the liner, so as to increase the amount of cooling surface acted upon by the cooling water in the jacket.
