W C Carter Patent No 23179 of 1912

Provides for effecting for effecting the distribution by means of a secondary piston provided in the cylinder head, and so arranged that it controls the inlet and exhaust ports by means of slots in a protruding hollow end. This piston is reciprocated by the action of the suction and pressure in the cylinder, and suitable gear is also provided by which the intake port is uncovered on the suction stroke, both ports being closed on the compression and firing strokes, and the exhaust ports being uncovered on the scavenging stroke.

The mechanism for controlling these motions comprises a cam-shaft, the cams mounted upon which are arranged to actuate cam rollers mounted on a shaft firmly secured in the hollow upper side of the controlling piston. The configuration of these cams acting in conjunction with the action of the pressures in the cylinder controls the movement of the secondary piston.

The inventor claims for this arrangement amongst other advantages cheapness of construction, facility of adjustment and convenience for effecting repairs.
