Lister 5/1 Diesel

Diter 15hp Diesel

Some more pic's and some other Spanish Trip Stuff

A few of the other mechanical things we came across on the second trip to Spain

Diter Engine at Brick Mill 1

This was the only engine we found in Spain, and this was one that Rita and Barbara (my sister) saw before I did! We had got lost a bit by cutting across country, and the Michelin maps were a bit lacking in accuracy of road numbering etc. Anyhow, we came through this little village and both Rita and Barbara shouted out "engine!" at the same time, bringing us to a quick halt and an even quicker bit of reversing back up the road. It was another 'Diter' diesel engine, very similar to the one we already had from our trip to Spain in 1997. It was missing a few bits and pieces, but turned over and seemed to be OK. It was driving a pug mill for making clay for bricks, another engine having stood around the other side to work the extruder, which pushed the clay through a die to extrude bricks with holes in.

Diter Engine at Brick Mill 2

Another view of the engine and the drive belt to the mixer feed screw. We couldn't establish ownership of the engine at the time, and promised ourselves that we would return on the way back home to have another look and see if we could sort something out. In the event we missed that by the engine blowing up.

About to leave the campsite for home

Last shot before we left Quartiera, near Faro, Portugal. The Lister VA (LH) and the Lister 3/1 are lashed down for the 10 hour drive up to northern Spain and the campsite at Navarette. We got very near, only about 60 km away when we lost the van engine. We collected the Petter AV1 diesel from the dealers in Faro itself on the way through, that's why it shows on the later pic's but not this one.

DC3 at Tractor Dealers in Salamanca

Tractor dealer from heaven!! This was a largish tractor spares operation in Salamanca, which had this DC-3 up on steel supports. Stops you dead when you first see it, but a good advert and one that people remember. No engines in the cowlings, the props are on steel shafts only. The stock of newer and old stuff was very comprehensive indeed, and might be a source for some of those hard to get spares.

Avance Tractor Engine

Swedish device that combines engines and tractors, so should keep everyone happy! The Avance tractor had a hot-bulb two-stroke oil engine, and was considered ahead of its day when first produced in the early 1900's. I have a book on Hot Bulb Oil Engines dated 1909, and this engine is in there. This tractor was on the road to Pamplona at a Case tractor dealer. We asked about buying it but they had got attached to it. Shame, it would have restored quite well.

Avance Tractor 1

The poor old thing was a bit battered, but was quite complete. Anyone for a recovery job??

Avance Tractor 2

Side view of the Avance, showing the relative size of the machine. A big wind farm is up on the hills on the left, and a good wine Bodegas up the road from the tractor dealer. You can buy wine by the case at very reasonable prices :-))
