The Bolnes company were based in Holland, and were manufacturing engines in the early 1900's. The engine shown below is one of their later engines which are based very much on marine engine practice at the time. The crankcase is open, and has a trunk piston with a crosshead thrust block on the connecting rod.
It was claimed at the time that the engineer in charge of the engine could more easily access the working parts and could tell if something was overheating. The engine had a reversing gear fitted in the drive to the propeller.
