Yet another view of 474008 North American Aviation Mustang, taxiing in after its display with others of the same type.
Clipped wings identify this Spitfire as a late model, might be a Griffon engine but most likely a Merlin.
Sally B, a Boeing B17G flying over with undercarriage down, the painted engine cowling is commemorative in memory of Ted White, the original owner who was killed while flying his Harvard in Malta. The engine nacelle is painted the same colour as his Harvard's was. The Sally B web site is at:- http:// www.deltaweb.co.uk/sallyb/
Another Spitfire flypast at Duxford. This is an earlier Mark with the distinctive elliptical wings that made the profile of the aircraft so recognisable.
Guess what!! 474008 gets around.. We seem to have more of this aircraft than the others, but will replace with something different later on.
Another (different!) Mustang, taxiing back after the display flying at Duxford. We don't have much info on these aircraft after seven years or so, but the serial number makes it a bit older than 474008 above.
Radial-engined (Bristol Centaurus IIRC) Hawker Aircraft Sea Fury, a carrier based development of the original Hawker Typhoon. Various other engines were tried on the way, including the Napier Sabre in the original Typhoon.
Painted in English RAF camouflage, this is a Curtiss P40 Warhawk, looking a bit like a souped-up Hurricane. Engine was the Allison V1710 V12
Looks like a Grumman F8F Bearcat, introduced towards the end of WW2. Radial air-cooled engine, cooling flaps and (bomb racks?) open.
Lockheed P38 Lightning. Sadly, this one is no longer, having crashed at an airfield the following year IIRC. Also a Mosquito crashed the same season, two irreplaceable aircraft gone...
