Delhi Railway Museum Selection 4

The mighty Beyer-Peacock & Co., 'Beyer Garrett' locomotive, made in the UK but only one near to this size was ever used in the UK. Most were shipped to Rhodesia, South Africa and India for heavy coal haulage. This is one of only ten of this class that were made. The following views are of the different sections, as I couldn't get a detailed shot of something this close in one go.

Tender end of the loco, quite why they had shutters on the cab is a mystery to me, it must have been absolute hell in there in the summer heat, stoking that huge grate.

Ground level shot of the front of the engine. These were amongst the most powerful engines outside of the USA in their day, and were not matched by anything made since except for multiple diesel units.

Middle boiler section of the loco. The huge coal grate can be seen under the cab and the yellow pipe under the boiler is for water feed if my memory serves me correctly. The regulator lever is alongside the cabin and boiler and had to control both the forward and rear sections of the engine. The right-hand steam exhaust pipe can be seen in blue.

The front section and water tank. Enough water was carried for a single journey, and water stops were frequent in the hot climate. The water also provided tractive weight for the front engine section. The headlight was driven from a steam powered generator.

Another view of the Ramsome & Rapier Ltd., non-powered crane, 15 tons lifting capacity, six wheel chassis, wooden block faced brakes. 1883

A side shot of the Dubs & Co., Glasgow, 0-6-0, 1 metre gauge, two cylinders 14" X 22", Stephenson valve gear, injector boiler feed, two Ross 'pop' safety valves, Maker's number 2373. 1888

A general view of the museum grounds. The ponds are filled in the winter season, but water evaporates too quickly in the hot summer so they are left dry.

Another general view of the museum grounds, a bit foreshortened by the 135mm telephoto lens.
