DIAGNOSIS OF FAULTS IN THE F TYPE SOLEX (Pages 25-28) Page 2 of 3

While the carburettor plays a considerable part in the question of starting, there are also other factors which have a bearing thereon, especially when starting from cold and these should be examined on the following lines:-

DIFFICULT OR IMPOSSIBLE STARTING - ENGINE FAULTS

WASHERS
It is well to check carefully the tightness of the flange joint of the carburettor and also the cylinder head gasket, not omitting to examine the induction pipe washers, if this member is present.

VALVES
These should be particularly examined, for quite apart from the possibility of ordinary leakage through wear, etc., it is sometimes also possible for them to stick slightly when cold, which will always render starting impossible.

SUCTION-PIPES
In many modern cars, induction pipe depression is utilised for the operation of exhaust vacuum tanks, screen wipers and servo brakes. Where these are present it is most important to examine the various joints in connection with same, and also the accessories themselves to see that when out of operation there is no leakage.
