Other Peoples Caterpillar D2s

Hendrik van den Berg of Northern Cape, South-Africa has had this 3J in his family for more than 50 years.

Before being restored in '98/'99 she was used mostly to pull a disc on an irrigation farm.

She is a 1938 model ser. no. 3J1480.

Bob LaBarbera from Yuba City, California is the second owner of this beautiful 5J D2.  It is ser. no. 5J10366, built in 1947, with orchard seat and factory PTO.

It took Bob about 500 hours and various parts replacements to restore but it now looks and runs pretty much like new.

Bob's looking for an original lights/generator setup to finish the restoration.

D2 5J2710SP is owned by Robert Barrow of California. He's had this tractor for about seven years and has done heaps of work on it.

It's had a replacement pony crankshaft and general pony rebuild, left steering clutch, injectors, injection pumps and fuel transfer pump rebuilt.

He says the main engine runs fair but seems to be over-fuelling and he is looking for a precleaner and generator and lights setup.

Peter Simonson bought this 5U from a farmer and saw mill operator who bought it from another nearby farmer who used the Cat for skidding firewood, getting other machines unstuck and various other jobs.  It was mostly stored indoors and appears to have been well cared for with about 4300 hours on the meter.

Pete's plans for the tractor mostly involve using it for light jobs around fields and woods.  It starts easily and runs well.  The serial number is 5U1949 which makes it a 1948 model.

Mike Jensen's D2 has 3500 hours on it and is in pretty good condition.   The blade is a "Cat" factory blade and the pony and diesel start easy and run well.

It has an original pto and a non original belt pulley on it.

Mike is in Kansas and thinks the tractor has been in his general area all it's life

This is Bob Dunstan's first Cat, a 1952 D2 Ser No. 5U8960.  The 2-way dozer blade was made by Phillip Tractor in Oregon and was modified by the last owner to add a hinged brush rake.  Bob has 20 acres near Banks, Oregon where he uses the D2 for some ground work and orchard maintenance.

The undercarriage is about 90% and is in otherwise very good shape.

D2 5J650, built in 1938 is owned by Wayne Akerman from East Peoria.   When found it had a #41 hydraulic unit and PTO. The previous owner had been pulling a brush mower with it.

Wayne has replaced the track pins and bushings but links, rollers, sprockets and idlers were all good.

It gets used for clearing and small dozing jobs, but Wayne says "not in the business - just playing."

Here is a picture of Richard Booth's D2, number 5J10333. He's in Crane, Mo and just bought the crawler.

It had a leaking oil cooler which has been repaired and has a leaking crank shaft seal on pony motor for future attention. Other than those minor problems the tractor is in good condition with a good undercarriage.

Albert Bertagnolli's family owns a ranch in Wyoming and has had 3J1729 for the last 30 years. It is still regular use pounding fence posts.

He has an original blade and grease gun for it and it never fails to start, and has had very few repairs over the years
